SOCIAL THEMED SCULPTURES

Antón’s reality is reflected in his pieces. The two sculptures presented in this room with a social theme, “La marinera” and “La Señá Isabel”, are pieces with an intense expressionist voice.

La marinera, 1933.

This piece is probably one of the best and most representative of Antón’s artistic career.

It is a sculpture carved in wood, representing the wife of a sailor with her young son, on their way to the port to see whether her husband has returned home.

The sculptural ensemble is impregnated with a psychological and expressive eloquence that centres on the woman’s face, which shows anxiety and fear in the face of a possible tragedy. This feeling is further accentuated by the presence of the child, who looks directly at his mother and is crying out for her to pick him up, making the scene even more distressing.

The woman’s clothes are being blown about by gusts of winds, the same winds that put her husband’s life at risk, adding more drama to the piece.

La Señá Isabel, 1932

Made in cast bronze from the original plaster model that is preserved in the Museum, this sculpture is a half-length bust of Isabel, an elderly woman wearing a shawl and a typical manta from Candás, who lived near the Estrada Nora house that was converted into the Antón Museum.

It is a piece with a strong expressive load, where the artist draws focus to the clothes with very marked folds that add dynamism to the piece by playing with light and shadow.

The artist’s work focused on the woman’s hands and face, in whose physiognomy he found not only the characteristic features of old age but also the accumulated fatigue of many hours working.
