OTHER FORMS OF PLASTIC EXPRESSION

Antón was a multifaceted artist, who worked with different forms of artistic expression such as paintings, drawings and furniture, although he produced more sculptures than other forms of art.

La Promesa.

Oil on canvas, 1928.

This painting represents the devotion to the Christ of Candás, a very traditional custom in this town. Antón was inspired by a painting of the same title by the painter Ventura Álvarez Sala.
In the background of the painting, the artist has included the Cape of San Antonio, where the lighthouse and the hermitage of the same name are located. One of Antón’s favourite landscapes, which he would represent again in other pieces over the years.

Ruta pintoresa.

This landscape is a painting of a path known as “La Formiga”, located on Mount Fuxa opposite Candás’ maritime promenade. The piece is an oil on brass painting, the artists reused a tin can lid

Muebles

Antón also made different types of furniture for family use. The structure and decorations are traditional in style and have a markedly popular character.

The furniture was made with poor quality woods. He used mainly pine wood, and sometimes had to resort to using boards from the packaging boxes of canned products.

Once again, these pieces outline Antón’s expertise and skill in his ability to overcome the hurdles of lacking the resources he needed to work, with exceptional results.
