EL CHATO

Javier del Río

Javier del Río won the Antón Grant for Sculptural Creation in 1996 and carved “El Chato” in sandstone one year later.

The piece represents a head that reflects and expresses the artist’s concept of sculptural art as pure volume and form, free from any possible pictorial ambiguity.

The artist has sculpted only one side of the face, leaving the rest rough, thus maintaining the integrity of the rest of the block.
